Would Yeshua attend Gay Pride?

I wonder how many of you have attended a GayPride event? A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with my mother about Gay Pride. Yes I know, it's not the usual conversation topic you have with your mother and I tip-toed around it nervously for most of the time. She had watched a documentary about it and did not hesitate to voice her opinion. My mother never had a problem with my coming out and has often told me that she much prefers the company of gay men. But when it comes to Gay Pride, she articulated her feelings forcefully and to the point. "It's an outrage", "nobody should be allowed to dress up like that", "there are children watching" and so forth.

I could see where she was coming from and she had a point. I tried to explain to her that some of the more colourful "expressions" are akin to a teenager trying to make a statement and that until recently homosexual acts were illegal (and this is of course still the case in most of Africa, the Middle East and Asia). For many in the GLBT community, it's an opportunity to make a public statement about who they are without shame or fear. Even here in the West until very recently, the gay community suffered harassment and discrimination, which the movie "Milk" (the story about the gay activist Harvey Milk) portrays so well. It is no accident that the term "Gay Pride" is used and although I don't like it, I fully understand what it stands for and why.

I spoke to a Salvation Army chaplain several years ago who shared with me his harrowing coming out story (he was married with four children). He was ostracised from his spiritual community in the most brutal manner and never recovered from the trauma. It is sadly not an isolated case. We are in contact with many GLBT believers in Kenya and Ethiopia and know just how isolated and restricted their lives are. They would give their right arm to stage an event of affirmation in Nairobi or Addis Abeba that we here in the West wouldn't think twice about. In the UK we now have summer pride events in pretty much every town up and down the country (even Black Pride and Asian Pride).

In Germany the parades are called Christopher Street Parade, named after the police raid on 28th June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in 43 Christopher Street, NYC. The purpose of gay pride, despite its carnival atmosphere in the majority of cities in the West, is a serious one and should not be forgotten. It is to take a positive stance against discrimination and violence and to promote equal rights and dignity. It saddens me when I see an increasing indifference in our community towards this important date in our social calendar. I have often heard gay or lesbian friends say to me "what's the point", "we've achieved equality in the work place, adoption and marriage rights etc". To which I reply: "then go to Russia or Nigeria, Uganda or Kenya and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT community there - they need your support". "And stop taking your freedoms for granted
they were hard won by those who went before you".

There is nothing wrong in celebrating our diversity and unique contribution to society. We know how to throw a good party and enjoy ourselves and if you've never been to a Gay Pride event, you owe it to yourself to check it out. For the most part, it's harmless fun with a cheeky smile. From the 'dykes on bikes' to the carneval queens dressed in tight shorts, from gay anthems and rainbow flags - it's a day I would not miss for the world.

But back to the title of this blog post. Would Yeshua attend Gay Pride? What do you think? So many people have a sanitised image of our Messiah. He was the life and soul of the party. He loved people and attracted even the most hardened criminals. Remember the story where he turns water into wine at the wedding? It was the Chateau Lafite of its day. The guests ended up 'under the table', so it was hardly sparkling grape juice (as some Seventh Day Adventists and Mormons would have us believe). I imagine the atmosphere at that wedding would have been electric and full of fun and laughter and Yeshua would have been in the thick of the action, telling jokes and making everyone feel welcome.

So what about Gay Pride? Well, for one thing, most Pride marches these days fall on Shabbat and it took me a while to square it with my conscience to attend as a spectator. I wish it fell on Sundays (in Tel Aviv it's always on a Friday by the way), but here it's always on a Saturday. I love Shabbat. I look forward to each Shabbat as if it were a National Holiday. We light the candles on Friday night, say the blessings, welcome the angels and always make it a festival. But once or twice a year, we put on our Kippah and join in the carnival atmosphere of our favourite pride events on Saturday afternoon. I guess my question is more: Does Yeshua approve of us going there? I believe He does. Although he never violated the Torah, He showed His Fellow-Jews what the original intent was and removed many Rabbinic restrictions. He showed His followers that the Torah was a way of Grace for the people of Grace, that it served a positive purpose and was not to be abused by religious control-freaks. He identified with minorities, with the persecuted and those on the fringe of society. He was no prude and I'm sure He would appreciate the purpose of Pride and what it stands for.

Yeshua's enemies called Him a "friend of sinners", which He affirmed and took as a compliment. He was not ashamed to identify with those less fortunate. And while He would never sanction promiscuity, He knew how to have fun and encouraged others to enjoy themselves. He lived life abundantly, whereas most people seem to live lives of quiet desperation (to quote from Thoreau's "Walden").

So if you get the chance this year, go and enjoy yourself. And if you would like to participate with us in 2014 and march under the GayMessianic Banner, do get in touch with us - we'd love to hear from you.

Those who practice 'arsenokoitai' shall not inherit the Kingdom of G-d

So it is written, in black and white in I Cor 6:9-11, across the spectrum of English Bibles. Well, not quite. The NASB (New American Standard Bible) translates the Greek word arsenokoitai as'effeminate men'. Whereas the NIV (New International Version) translates the word as 'those who have sex with men' and the NKJV (New King James Version) as 'homosexuals'.

This is a review of Michael Wood's new book "Paul on Homosexuality", published in 2011. It provides a scholarly insight into the Greek word arsenokoitai, which has caused untold pain and suffering over the centuries to G-d's gay and lesbian children.

I am listing Wood's own words from the book in italics.

It is alarming that the translators' own prejudices against effeminate men are now taught as God's own prejudices. The God who is discussed in modern translations is, in many ways, the opposite of the God who is discussed in the original Bible - the only Bible . ...God wants his children to lovingly accept the dispositions of all manners of men (and women).

Paul constantly focused on the just, fair, altruistic treatment of people. In his society, the unjust, unfair, unkind treatment of others was found in abundance everywhere. But perhaps no mistreatment of others was more visibly on display than the cruel injustice committed against young boys. During Paul's day, young boys were sodomised routinely and regularly (emphasis mine throughout). For men, sex with young boys was often more desirable than sex with women. This is illustrated in a play written by Quintus Novius, a near contemporary of Paul. One character nonchalantly proclaims, 'everyone knows that a boy is superior to a woman'. The character then proceeds to explain the attributes of boys that turn everyone on.

What age were these boys? The upper limit was determined by body hair. The moment hair formed on the buttocks or face, the boy was too old to be desired for sex. There is no getting away from it. Roman men were attracted to young boys up to a certain age - that age may be defined as the point after puberty that the body developed hair on the buttocks and on the face (Professor Ray Laurence, 'a history of pleasure in imperial Rome').

What was the lower age limit? There wasn't one! The youngest boys were open to be raped. And raped they were... en masse. In many cases, men preferred the youngest boys. They took pleasure in their screaming and wailing produced by the destruction of their virgin innocence (Prof Lawrence, p80).

For wealthy men, owning a stock of slave boy-toys was one of the most common status symbols of the day. The sons of the family greatly desired their fathers' stock of slave boys. The satirist Martial, another near contemporary of Paul, wrote that sons so desired to rape their father's slave boys that they got busy doing so the very night of their father's death; before the corpse was even cold, the sons went straight for the slave boys (Craig A. Williams, Roman Homosexuality, 2nd edition).

Moses' famous Ten Commandments are knows as the Decalogue. The Didache, a first-century Christian work, used the 'murder, adultery, steal' order (i.e. the 6th, 7th and 8th commandment) as follows: don't murder (6), don't commit adultery, don't rape young boys, don't have sex with prostitutes (7), don't steal... In early Christian 'sin lists', the prohibitions relative to the seventh commandment refer to either Adultery (sex with a married woman), Raping slave boys or Sex with prostitutes. It is extremely important to recognise how common it was for the earliest Christians to list 'raping young boys' relative to the seventh commandment. This is a critical piece of information, for it allows us to understand the precise meaning of the ancient Greek word 'arsenokoitai'.

I would just like to pause there for a moment. For the sake of brevity, I am only highlighting the key sentences relating to 'arsenokoitai', the word that has caused so much misunderstanding. Wood goes into much more detail and I urge you to obtain a copy of his book. His is one of the best I have read on the subject of Homosexuality and the Bible.

Wood continues: As previously documented, early Christian sin lists consistently listed the rape of slave boys relative to the seventh commandment, which was only natural, given that raping slave boys was the most common form of marital unfaithfulness at that time.

It cannot be emphasised enough that raping slave boys was associated with the seventh commandment. The Didache documents 'not raping young boys' as an extention of the seventh commandment. The Epistle of Barnabas documents 'not raping young boys' as an extention of the seventh commandment. Clement of Alexandria documents 'not raping young boys' as an extention of the seventh commandment.

The arsenokoitai, then were the rapists of young slave boys!

Modern conventional Bibles claim that no homosexual shall enter the kingdom of God. From a historical perspective, virtually every heterosexual Roman male was both a womaniser and a rapist of young boys. Given that 1. Timothy 1:9-10 used arsenokoitai relative to the seventh commandment, we know that the passage was actually condemning those heterosexual rapists of slave boys, not homosexuals.

Once again, we find that... Bibles contain a prejudicial statement which is patently erroneous... Note: The Messianic Scriptures (NT) were written in Koine Greek, the 'lingua franca' of the day.

  • Does any Koine Christian sin list mention homosexuality relative to the seventh commandment? No, none do. Do Koine Christian sin lists mention raping young boys relative to the seventh commandment? Yes, very much so. Therefore, only 'rapists of young boys' matches 1. Timothy's use of the Decalogue in this passage.
  • Historically speaking, were the rapists of slave boys heterosexual or homosexual? When it came to adult sex, they slept with women, not men. It was the macho heterosexual men who were raping slave boys. "Homosexuals" is historically incorrect. Therefore, only 'rapists of young boys' matches the real-world situation being addressed in 1. Timothy 1:9-10.
Conventional translations ignore the context of the letter (the Decalogue), turn a blind eye to the historical setting, and contradict Paul's (and Jesus') most fundamental teaching, all at the same time.

Conventional translations replace 'boy rapers' with homosexuals. Were the rapists of slave boys inherently unloving? Yes, very much so. Are homosexuals inherently unloving? No, of course not.

Stay tuned for part two.

Commemorating Purim

This weekend, commencing Saturday evening at sunset and ending Sunday evening at Sunset, is the Biblical commemoration of the Book of Esther. The photo shows a scroll of the book of Esther (also called "Megillah"). Incidentally, it is the only book in the Hebrew Scriptures where G-d is not mentioned at all. Nevertheless, HaShem was very much at the centre of events. It's a short book and recounts the historic events of the planned genocide of the Jewish People by an evil general of the Persian Empire known as Haman, a descendant of Amalek. If you are able, take out some time to read the book of Esther. You will learn that the plan of Haman was thwarted through the Prophet Mordechai and the Jewish Queen Esther. It's a story of immense courage under terrifying circumstances. Today, Purim has been set aside in synagogues around the world as a period of commemoration and rejoicing for G-d's miraculous intervention and protecting His people from certain genocide all those years ago. However, detached by several thousand years of history, it is tempting to read the book of Esther as 'one of those stories in the Bible'. But if you consider that had Haman succeeded with his evil plan, the majority of the Jewish people would have been wiped off the face of the earth.

The 20th century has seen arguably the worst genocides since the dawn of history. Notably the Holocaust (or Shoah), genocide of the Armenians, the Khmer genocide in Cambodia, the genocide of Bosnians in Srebrenica, the horrors of the Rwandan genocide and more recently the genocide in Darfur (Sudan) and now in Syria.

Syria is the most recent example of the depth to which the human heart can sink. Civilians are being lined up and shot or raped. Children are terrified of venturing out to play and refugees are fleeing into neighbouring countries.

Whether you personally celebrate Purim or not, try and take some time out this week to read the book and reflect upon the seriousness of the planned genocide that was overcome. It is most significant to truly conceive what that horrific term means because it is happening on earth right in front of our noses. Christians ensure massacres and acts of genocide throughout Asia and Africa as we speak. Regimes in nations like Iran have already planned the genocide of the Jewish people in Israel and have their militias of Hezbollah and Hamas, ready on Israel's borders for the slaughter.

This terrible, tragic and horrific reality is a direct manifestation of sin. Thank G-d when He appoints leaders who act with benelovence, compassion and in the interests of peace and humanity. But these men (and women) are few and far between, because of the greedy and self-serving nature of politicians. Therefore, thank G-d for His Messiah and the Salvation that He brings. Yeshua is the Saviour of the WHOLE WORLD, especially to those who believe (1 Timothy 4:10). He is in other words the Saviour of every human who has ever been born, but currently only true believers are aware of this fact and are able to enter into that special relationship with G-d who became flesh to dwell among us. But make no mistake - the G-d of Israel is the G-d of ALL mankind (Jeremiah 32:27) and one day through Messiah He will draw ALL men to Himself (John 12:32).

Pray earnestly and in tears for His coming and call upon G-d to appoint men to intervene against genocide and acts of genocide, to establish for humanity and all living beings a world in which none will need to be afraid. It is the duty of believers to forget themselves, to call upon G-d and pray into existence an Earth which is not capable of these horrors, an Earth where there will finally be real peace among the nations:

And they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. For nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore - Isaiah 2:4.

May the Lord our G-d hasten that day.
Shabbat Shalom
Shavuah Tov and Chag Sameach!

To the one you love...

Well, Valentine's Day is upon us again. If you want to know the origin's of this day, you can look it up on Google. The Western Church celebrates it in commemoration of St. Valentinus. Be that as it may, it has become across the world a day when lovers celebrate their love for each other and surprise each other with gifts and a nice romantic meal. Unlike Christmas or Easter (which are deeply pagan in their origin), I don't think it is wrong for lovers who are believers in Messiah to express their love for each other on this day. I wanted to share with you some wonderful advice I came across on how to keep the romance alive in a relationship.

  • Give your partner what he/she wants before they ask for it. Be a Knight, be a Lady, be nice!

  • Balance your relationship! Libra, the sign of relationships is symbolised by the scales. Give as much as you receive, talk as much as you listen, pleasure as much as you enjoy.
;
  • Give your partner space. While Location, Location, Location is the real estate agents' mantra, Space, Space, Space should be yours.

  • Communicate about everything immediately. Don't wait! The longer you hold something in, the more damage it causes.

  • Communicate, but not when you are emotionally charged. Most ancient Greek tragedies (emphasis on the tragedy) were woven around the clash between the opposing forces of reason and passion. Both energy fields are needed in a relationship. However, keep the reason for conversations and the passion for the bedroom. Don't mix!

  • NEVER take your partner for granted! That is the apocalypse of all relationships. Always spend a few moments thanking the Universe, God, your mother-in-law and your good fortune for sending you your loved one.

  • Relationships evolve - don't try to avoid change, it's inevitable. According to Taoism, we start our relationship with the Yang, the masculine principle, but if we want the relationship to continue to evolve we most move to the Yin, the feminine principle. Yang is the part when we fall in love, have sex three times a day, and act all cute and childlike. It's super fun, but it can burn us if we don't cool it and move to the Yin principle. Yin symbolises the feminine energies of family, security and commitment.

  • Try to make friends with your partner's friends and have your partner connect to your friends. The Sufis say "show me your friends and I will tell you who you are". Most important, make sure to establish common friends as a couple.

  • Do not punish! Forgive them, even if your partner is infuriating and did not wash the dishes, pair up the socks, or check the pockets before washing your lipstick. When you punish the one closest to you, you punish yourself. It's self-destructive.

  • Always keep an element of surprise. Spontaneity, adventures, breaking the routine and doing things together that you have never done before (camping, travelling to an exotic country, mountain climbing) will generate stories that belong only to the two of you. It's like creating your own mythology. According to Kabbalah, God created the Universe with a story. You can recreate your relationship with these stories.
Happy Valentine's Day!

The Bible DOES NOT condemn homosexuality

In this groundbreaking article, Messianic Jewish Rabbi Dr Les Aron Gosling offers sound biblical teaching on a subject that has polarised (and tormented) believers for centuries. It gives tremendous hope for gay and lesbian believers in the Jewish Messiah, who take their faith (and their Bibles) seriously. Shabbat Shalom!
"And there came two angels to Sodom at evening. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom, and seeing them rose up to meet them. And he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. And he said, Behold my lords, turn in, I request of you, into your servant's house, and stay all night, wash yourself, and you shall rise up early and go on your ways. And they said, No, but we will abide in the street all night. And he attempted to persuade them, and they finally agreed to enter his home. And he made them a feast and provided unleavened bread and they did eat. But before they retired, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both old and young, all the people from every quarter. And they called out to Lot, Where are the men who came into your house tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them. Lot went outside to speak to them, and closed the door behind him. And he said, I request earnestly of you, brethren, do not so wickedly. I have two daughters who are virgins, let me, I request of you, bring them both out to you, and do you to them as is pleasing in your eyes. Only unto these men do nothing, for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. And they replied, Stand back! And they said, This one resides as an alien, and he will play at being a judge! Now we will deal worse with you, than with them. And they grabbed at Lot, and came near to breaking the door down. But the men inside put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and they slammed the door. And they afflicted the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great so that they wearied themselves to locate the door" (Gen 19.1-11).

Specifically from the twelfth century this story has been used to attack homosexuals. The use of the term "to know" in this account refers to sexual awareness. These aggressive rapists were not looking for an opportunity to introduce these strangers to the local library as a centre of knowledge. The same book of Genesis notes that Adam knew his wife and she conceived (see also Lk 1.34). The verb "to know" occurs 943 times in the Hebrew Bible and a full ten of these occasions it refers to sex.
What is astonishing to realise from the above account is that Lot preferred to lose out financially than to allow his foreign guests to be so abused. How do we arrive at such a conclusion? Recall that Lot's culture was so different from our own. His daughters were his property, and daughters were purchased for marriage. No one would want to buy a girl who had her "use-by date" spoiled!

Hospitality was a sacred duty in the ancient world. Travellers at night could freeze to death as temperatures plummeted. They could also fare less well if captured in a nomad attack. Now we happen to know some Arab brethren, and they assure us that even today in Arab countries it is expected that even an enemy should be extended shelter in the evening if he so requested it. There can be no doubt that the convention of hospitality demands it. In the first century it was written, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers. For some have unknowingly shown hospitality to angels" (Heb 13.2).

Forcing sex on men was a tried-and-true method of effectively humiliating them. During war, besides slaughtering children and raping women, the captured defeated enemy would be "sodomised" by the victors, thus insulting the conquered by treating them as women. The sin of Sodom, then, appears to be nothing more than rejecting hospitality toward those in need -- the leveling of abuse, offense and insult to travelling strangers.

The point of the Genesis account is certainly not sexual ethics! After all "just" and "righteous" Lot (2 Pet 2.7,8) offered his daughters to be raped by the inhabitants of the city -- men and women! Remember, the account tells us that "all" the city was involved. The entire point of the story is about inhospitality in the form of abusive assault.

Ezekiel understood that this was the case. He writes that Sodom was condemned and destroyed "because they did not aid the poor and needy" (Eze 16.48,49). Wisdom agrees with the prophet's assessment. The sin of Sodom was "a bitter hatred toward strangers" and "making slaves of guests who were benefactors" (19.13). "Slaves" were used by those who owned them for sexual purposes and they had no real choice in the way their masters treated them. The angels of God were about to be treated in the same aggressive, brutal, abusive manner. Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zephaniah refer to Sodom's sin as injustice, oppression, partiality, lies, encouraging evildoers, and -- surprise, surprise -- adultery (Isa 1.10-17; 3.9; Jer 23.14; Zeph 2.8-11). Note that adultery is the only sex sin in the lengthy list. Homosexuality is not even given scant mention!

Please note, too, that sex itself is not the concern. For, strictly speaking, adultery is not a crime or offense against a woman, nor is it an offense against the natural intimacy of a marriage, nor yet again against the inherent requirements of sex. The crime of adultery is ever and always an offense against justice. For, adultery offends the MAN to whom the woman BELONGS as part of his total PROPERTY VALUE.

But if you won't be convinced by the prophets, can Our Lord Yeshu persuade you?

Yeshu tells us what was the sin of Sodom.

"These twelve Yeshua sent forth, and commanded them saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans do not enter. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Provide neither gold nor silver, nor brass in your purses, nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor a staff (for the workman is worthy of his meat). And into whatsoever city or town you shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy. And there abide till you go thence." [In other words depend on your host's hospitality.] "And when you come into a house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when you depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Truly I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom...in a day of judgment than for that city" (Mt 10.5-15).

Get the point? The helpless, virtually destitute disciples had to depend on the hospitality of others. Those who would not show them hospitality would come under a judgment that will be more fierce than that experienced by Sodom, for the same crime.

What then of Paul's statements in his letter to the Romans?

As the passage is rather lengthy we will not reproduce it here (Rom 1.18,22-28). But a careful examination of the text shows clearly that Paul has certain, specific men in mind. They are philosophers! Not just any philosophers, but those who have at some time rejected the Creator and all knowledge about him, and who actually know better. They were men who were secret devotees of a mystery religion of idolatrous worship which involved bestiality (sex with animals -- Rom 1.26). Bestiality is still practiced today in parts of India and Africa, and, according to Kinsey, is more widespread on American farms than we would care to admit! Catherine II, Empress of all Russia and a deeply "religious" woman, died attempting to accommodate the penis of a horse on November 6, 1796. (Some modern historians are busily rewriting and revising this period of Mother Russia's past, but truth will "out" eventually.) But these men Paul referred to were, in fact, high-priests and initiates of a religion of idolatry which had its centre in Alexandria in Egypt.

Paul is not discussing those males who are naturally inverted, never "surrendering," "leaving," "giving up," or "exchanging" the natural use of a woman for that of another man. Far from it. Paul is here ascribing the exchange of the true God for IDOLS, sexual confusion being the outcome of idolatrous confusion (Rom 1.20-25). Paul bases his view squarely on his understanding of the Purity Code of Leviticus 15.18 which refers to the ceremonial uncleanness of cultic, sacred or temple male prostitution (in the homogenital sense), a passage which is not to be confused with that which constitutes sin.

Again, in our society today we hear (as in the Dark Ages) of Satanic rituals that include sexual acts either for fertility or some sort of sacrifice. Now all of us should object vehemently about such sex rites. We would even decry it if the sex acts involved were engaged in by a married couple only. And why is this? Certainly not because sex in itself is wrong but because the sex was used in the worship of the Dark Lord.

And so with Paul in Romans 1. Idolatrous religious concerns, not sexual ethical ones, are the reason for the objection. Paul is not making use here of classic Stoic concepts, though ignorant Christians claim this is what he is doing. For, they claim in Romans 1.28, that we do locate a standard Stoic formula ("things that should not be done" -- ta me kathekonta). Nothing could be further from the truth. While the formula is there, Paul was a Jew. Above all else gross ignorance by Christians of Jewish thoughtforms and Jewish Scripture creates more problems than they are worth. Paul is not writing to the Messianic Community at Rome by appealing to pagan Stoic reference works. Romans 1 is entirely based on Jewish Scripture. Proof? The Wisdom of Solomon 12.23-15.13 is the basis of Paul's argument in Romans the first chapter! Get yourself a copy of the Apocrypha (it is Scripture) and read it for yourself!

But we shall still get arguments that laws under Moses forbad homogenital contact.

It is intriguing that fundamentalist believers, and others, admit that the Levitical purity codes are "all done away in Christ," and all Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant authorities say that this is so. And yet for some reason all that Leviticus or Deuteronomy states about sex is yet still valid! Sex laws and tithing laws are still in current use -- and all other laws, rules, statutes and regulations are definitely out!

Unbelievable!

The Levitical code is irrelevant in deciding whether gay sex is right or wrong and all arguments concerning sex based on Moses must be discarded. Recall that if Abraham, the father of the faithful, had lived in the days of Moses he would have been stoned to death for having sexual relations with his sister, Sarah!

There is also another factor to consider when we read in the Levitical code the words "unclean" and "abomination." And that is, neither of these concepts are to be equated with "sin." What the teaching of Leviticus is stressing is ceremonial wholeness or ceremonial completeness in the worship of God. We can ascertain that this is the case easily enough by referring to a section dealing with leprosy. Now having leprosy is not a sin, as even Blind Freddy will admit. Now consider the following Levitical purity code:

"Then the priest shall consider: and behold if the leprosy has covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean that has the plague. It is all turned white, so it is clean" (Lev 13.13).

If a person had leprosy that person was called "unclean." He was not called a sinner. Sin had nothing to do with it. But if the leprosy spread right over his or her body so that it covered it entirely, the person was no longer considered "unclean." Believe it or not! Note the injunction: "since it has all turned white, he is clean."

The Hebrew word for uncleanness or "abomination" (in the quaint Old English) is toevah. And it has to do with cultic, ritual or religious situations. The author of Leviticus could easily have used another word, zimah, for injustice or sin -- that which is wrong in itself. But Moses doesn't do this. Nor does Ezra who, after the Babylonian captivity, updated the Torah for his day and age.

My stand on this finds confirmation in the LXX (the Septuagint Version of the Hebrew Scriptures). The committee which put the LXX together, 200 or 300 years before Mashiach, could have used any number of Greek words to translate toevah as sin if the issues of Leviticus involved sin. Indeed anomia could have been used for it means the violation of a law. But in no way did the committee use such a word. They knew better! They chose the Greek word bdelygma -- and what does this word mean?

Nothing less than ritual impurity, a matter of ceremonial uncleanness.

The same principle applies to Leviticus 18.22, "You shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."

Ritual or ceremonial uncleanness is in view. And frankly, if we cannot accept the obvious reading wherein the LXX uses bdelygma for "abomination" then look at the context. Verse 21 right through to verse 23 is discussing nothing less than temple prostitution! Get the point?

Some people interpret Paul as indicating that homosexuals are condemned to hell, but a cursory reading of Paul without a knowledge of Jewish thoughtforms (of any writer in the Bible) is a prime danger that can lead us into error (and often has). Certainly Paul based his judgment on the law. When we realise this we can better make sense of his statements.

The texts in Leviticus 18.22 and 20.13 are often used by fundamentalists to speak out against homosexuality but they are, in fact, part of a larger ceremonial purity code, or holiness code.

The fact is Israel as a nation was separated from the other nations of the world, and they had to do everything differently to the practices of the countries surrounding them. Among other things,

[1] they had to eat different foods (but fundamentalists are not against eating these foods)

[2] they could not wear any clothing of mixed fabrics (but fundamentalists wear polyester)

[3] and a man had to sleep in another bed in another room if his wife was menstruating (this is not an issue to fundamentalists -- as far as I know)

[4] and if you happened to sleep in a wet-spot you'd be unclean until the evening (fundamentalists are silent regarding this aspect of their lives. I'm assuming that fundamentalists still do engage in sex).

Why are all these points (and there are tonnes more) not a worry to fundamentalists?

Simply because they know that the purity code of the Hebrews has been done away, unless you are an Orthodox Jew. Cultic or ceremonial prostitution is being discussed. The term "abomination" is a word always linked with, and meaning, temple sexual idolatry.

In Romans 1 Paul condemns the Gentile world by using an illustration of God-rejecting idolatrous homogenital or homosexual philosophers which would immediately have gained the sympathy (along with a willing ear) of the Jewish Christians who were among those he was addressing in Romans.

But if you read Romans you will notice how, in the following arguments, he shows that the Jewish Christians were equally guilty as far as the law was concerned. Before God nobody could lift their heads with spiritual pride. But then he goes further and argues that in the Messiah all the Jewish ceremonial law was superseded. Clearly his psychology is to make the Jewish Christians aware of the need that now existed to accept the Gentile believers without looking down their noses at them. And finally, Paul rebukes the Gentile Christians for any smugness or intolerance they might be feeling or exhibiting toward the Jews.

In fact, summing up his case for the Gospel of Grace, Paul informs both the Jewish and Gentile Christians "I know and am persuaded in the Lord Yeshua that nothing is unclean of itself" (Rom 14.14).

But we can still hear the protests! What about Sodom and Gomorrah going after what Jude called "strange flesh" (Jude 7)?

This was not some sin involving homosexuality. These people and the inhabitants of "the cities of the plain" were involved in sex with angels (aliens). There was a great deal of extra-terrestrial visitation of planet Earth at that time and it wasn't just the men of Sodom, Gomorrah and the cities of the plain that were entangled therein. After all, the women of Sodom were demanding sex with the "angels" in Lot's house (Jubilees 7.20,21; 20.5,6).

And quite frankly, I won't lower myself to get involved in a public discussion (let alone a public debate) with representatives of the Moral Majority on the proper translation of the Greek words arsenokoitai and malakoi. These words occur in two lists of sinners but they have no actual context to help suggest an appropriate meaning (1 Cor 6.9,10; 1 Tim 1.9,10).

Arsenokoitai in Corinthians appears as oute malakoi oute arsenokoitai and has been translated variously as "sodomites," "homosexuals," "practicing homosexuals," "male prostitutes," "perverts," "sexual perverts," "people of infamous habits," and "child molesters." One authority suggests the word here means a male prostitute who cultivates the elderly as that they might inherit their estates.

Malakoi has been translated as "catamites," "the effeminate," "boy prostitutes," "sissies," and, until the Reformation in the 16th century and in Roman Catholicism in the 20th century, "masturbators." Of itself malakos (the plural of malakoi) literally means "soft." It is used of clothing (Mt 11.8). One authority suggests it should be translated as "loose," "wanton," "unrestrained," "undisciplined." And this would seem to be the case. At their core, both Greek words suggest exploitation, inequality, abuse and unbridled lust.

Even the contemporary homosexual subculture has derogatory terms that apply to some of the abuses contained in those Greek words. "Chicken hawk" refers to men who prey on attractive young boys. "Slut" and "whore" are both insults aimed at the wildly unrestrained, promiscuous man who will take on all "comers" (so to speak) -- what we would call "toilet hoppers."

One thing for certain, there will continue to be an enormous range of interpretation in future versions of the Bible because both words cover an enormous acreage of meanings. And nobody quite knows what Paul was getting at. Paul could have had some practices of S&M in mind. This would satisfy the implication of payment that is inferred in the word arsenokoitai with its accompanied "abuse."

And, really, nobody in their right mind (in our opinion) could justify some of the brutal savagery included in the S&M range of torments. The Bible, above all else when referring to human relationships, calls for concern, love and caring, mutual respect and responsible sharing -- not a blood-stained whip, dripping candle wax, and slavery. It is the violation of these principles of love which the Bible condemns, not homosexuality. Again, we are not necessarily implying that the Bible teaches homosexuality. Personally, I am not homo-anything!

We are just being honest with the biblical record and stating that it does not teach against it.

If people want to hate homosexuals and homosexual behaviour, they have to look elsewhere other than the Bible to find justification for so doing.
